Sunflowers: when to put them in the ground

Wait until the soil is warm and the last frost is gone. Then poke a hole, drop a seed, and stand back.

Sunflowers are the easiest big reward in the whole garden. Here in the Gatineau Hills, I wait until the nights stop being cold (usually right after the long weekend in May) and the soil feels warm to the back of my hand.

Poke a hole about an inch deep. Drop one seed. Cover it. Water it. That’s the whole secret. Give them a sunny spot and something to lean on when they get tall, because they will get tall.

In the book, the whole story starts because a few sunflower seeds fall out of a little girl’s pocket. That’s how forgiving they are: even forgotten seeds grow.

Grow something today. 🌻
